Can caffeine cause heartburn? Yes! It is indeed one of the main factors that trigger an acidic stomach or gastro esophageal reflux disease. For example, caffeine is found in coffee which can decrease the pressure in the lower esophageal sphincter causing gastro esophageal reflux. Coffee is highly acidic which can increase the stimulation of hypersecretion gastric acids. It can also elevate the stress hormones such as cortisol, epinephrine and norepinephrine. Caffeine can suppress the immune system function by chronic level of stress hormones in which the bacteria helicobacter pylori can thrive in the stomach and cause ulcers. 

Sodas, chocolate and even decaffeinated coffee contains the stimulants that can increase hyperacidity in your stomach.

Here are some remedies that you can try to prevent having heartburns.

• Identifying the kind of foods you were going to take. There are certain foods that totally produce acids in your body like, deep fried foods, foods rich in calories and sugar, yogurt, soda, chocolate, coffee and all foods containing caffeine, alcohol, and even fruits that are citrus. It is best to avoid or completely eliminate them.

• Eat small meals beside from long gap of meal. Don’t let too much hunger reach you because of the emptiness of your stomach can cause in increasing the stimulation of acids with nothing to digest. It is advised to eat small meals to prevent it. You can also eat bread which is rich in carbohydrates, but don’t overdo it because it may alter the effects. So, you need to watch your every eating.

• Do not go to bed after a meal or right after eating. The acids will rise up to your esophagus because of your position and will cause heartburn. Take a small walk even inside your house, or wait at least an hour before you going to bed.

• Don’t think that drinking cold milk relieves the pain. As the milk enters your stomach, it increases the acids secretion.

• Drink a glass or water mixed with 1 tsp of baking soda, this works as antacids. You can also try some other antacids which can be bought OTC or with prescription in drugstores.

• Elevate your chest and head from your stomach by putting some pillows or stocking some blocks under the legs of your bed frame. This will prevent the acid from reaching your esophagus.

• Natural treatments such as drinking coconut water, fish oil, or chewing fennel seeds three times a day are also good in this condition. Fish oil contains omega 3 which is best for the reduction of secretion of acids in your stomach.
