How to Treat Animal Bite Wounds
Prevention is better than cure. It is always important to know preventive measures than wait for the moment of incident and look for ways to keep you away from complications or even death. Just like dealing with animal bites, effects of rabies or poisons produced by different animals vary on duration and intensity. It is significant to know which you should do and not do before implementing procedures. If you don’t have any idea on what to do at the very moment you were bitten, you will most likely do the wrong things because fear dominates you.
Domestic pets are the most common recorded bites. Since pets are also considered as members of the family, your full trust that your dogs or cats won’t bite you is present but even family members gets angry for quite some time and it is where pet’s bite comes in. In this case, you should never disturb your pets while eating and never leave children playing with your pets. Others are bitten by pets of other people as their defense to protect their master or themselves. No matter how cute the animal is, don’t touch it if you are not sure that it won’t bite. Dog bites are more common but wounds from cat’s bite are more prone to infection because of their sharp teeth which can puncture your skin deeper.
If you will be bitten or you find someone bitten by dog or cat, make sure that you wash the wound with mild soap and running water for 5-10 minutes. Apply pressure dressing to the wound if it is severely bleeding. Elevate the affected area. Call for help to cage the animal involved. Do not catch it by yourself especially if you are not sure if the animal is immunized. Go to the doctor as soon as possible making sure that the dog or cat is caged for further observation.
If bitten by bats, raccoons, skunks and other wild animals, make sure that you call the animal control authorities to capture the animal to determine for rabies. To any kind of animal bites, sucking of the wound to extract rabies, venom or poison is no longer practiced because the person has the possibility to be infected through dental cavities and mouth ulcers.
