Causes of urinary tract infection
Scientist have discovered why urinary tract infections can be so persistent. Researchers at Boston University have identified the mechanism of which E. coli, the bacteria that causes infection; cling so tenaciously to the lining of the urinary tract. Each bacterium, they say, send out hundreds of microscopic P-pili that are attach to a host cell. The P-pili are very strong, can bend and stretch up to five times their normal length, and thus are able to resist being washed away by the flow of urine.

- Drink up. Women suffer from bladder infections most frequently because of their physical makeup: the opening of a woman's urethra is closer to her bladder, and hence bacteria travel there more easily. Drinking lots of water helps relieve bladder infections and painful urination. Fruit juices contains acids that help counteract bacteria, but sometimes citrus fruit juices can make matter worse. Drink several glasses of water everyday
- Avoid yeast or moldy food. Vinegar, pickles, mushrooms, cheese and most bread contain either yeast or acid that encourages bacterial growth.
- Eat garlic. It relieves bladder and vaginal infections.
- Cut back on caffeine. More than a cup or two daily of coffee or caffeine cola can possibly contribute to bacteria overproduction.
- Limit simple carbohydrates. Your body needs plenty of carbohydrates for healthy functioning, but stick to complex carbohydrates like fruits, vegetables and wheat bread. Too many sweets, white bread, potatoes and other starchy foods high in simple carbohydrates provide a feast for bacteria.
- Refrain from alcohol. So if you're suffering from urinary tract infection, take a break from drinking. Bacteria love alcohol.
- Apply yogurt. A spoonful of cool, plain yogurt applied to your urinary area can help relieve itching.
- Take a shower. Warm bath water encourages bacterial growth. Avoid bubble baths and bath oils.
- Stay out of swim. Chlorinated water- not drinking water but that found in swimming pools and hot tubs promotes bacterial growth.
- Avoid antibiotics. These drugs so the job of killing bacterial but they're so good at that they kill a type of yeast-fighting bacteria, which can lead to or worsen a yeast infection.
- Avoid wet or tight clothing. Bacterial thrive in warm, damp places, so void tight undergarment and pants made of nylon. At the very least wear undergarment with a cotton crotch. Don't wear pantyhose underneath pants. Don't walk around in your wet bathing suit after swimming. Lie in the sun to dry it out or take it off.

- Exercise your pelvic muscles. Exercising can strengthen them. Try this: while urinating, practice stopping, then starting again, this is known as the Kegel exercise. At other times of the day, contract these muscles for a few seconds.
